INCONSISTENT OVERNIGHT POLICY RATE HAUNTS MALAYSIANS

Bank Negara Malaysia has announced an increment of Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) to 2.25%, for financial institutions to remain accommodative and supportive of the economic growth. 

The UCSI Poll Research Centre recently released a poll result on Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) in Malaysia. The poll was conducted among 1,021 adults in Malaysia.

Those who reported that the OPR affected their purchasing power (55%) were asked on how they were affected. The results are shown as below.

Out of the 1,021 respondents, 71% were aware of the changes made by Bank Negara on the OPR. However, only 58% understood how OPR works. Among those who knew how OPR works, 58% said the OPR will increase their monthly instalment payment and 36% were concerned that their bank loans may not be approved. On the other hand, 38% were happy that they will receive more interest from their savings. 55% of the respondents agreed that their purchasing power will be affected. Out of this, 64% stated that they would not want to spend much and 36% said they would save more when OPR increases.
